A Rock 'N Roll opening at PING PONG Miami 2015

I love donuts.

Miami, during Art Basel Miami Beach, is a zoo; the highways are overloaded and traffic slows to a crawl, the hotels double their prices and halve their service, restaurants (when you can get in) want to churn the tables as quickly as possible. It's not a particularly hospitable environment, and we often wonder why come. And then there is the art – a lot of really interesting work that makes the whole trip worthwhile.Your eyeballs get sore from so much to see.

Being dutiful art world soldiers, we managed to hit most of the main fair venues – this year including: Art Miami + Context, Scope, NADA, Untitled, Pulse, Miami Project, Aqua, X Contemporary, an opening at the Perez Art Museum, and two visits to the grandaddy show, Art Basel Miami Beach (also known as ABMB or "the Big Art").

And this year for the first time I showed two of my pieces (below) in a group show called PING PONG Miami. A sister show to PING PONG Basel (where I showed this year but didn't make it out there personally) and Ping Pong Los Angeles, this group show is coordinated by our Swiss friends Sue and Tony. It was a nice venue in downtown Miami at the Dupont Building, and Tony rocked us with his guitar magic at the opening on Friday night. Check out the pictures. I'm looking forward to another show in Basel next year.

SALVATION mural installation at Gallery 825

My new mural "Little Carnita Finds Salvation" was installed last week at the entrance of Gallery 825, just in time to be unveiled at the LA Art Association's annual benefit auction Saturday night. I hope that it enjoys a multi-year run at 825 La Cienega Blvd.

The vinyl wrap looks beautiful and glossy, and I could have passed it off as paint – except that I don't paint. Thanks to Fernando and the crew at CRA Custom for the printing & install.

Lorraine put together a little vid of the event

A stitched version of the installation. It's located in a narrow, covered entry .

LAAA's 2015 Annual Benefit Auction

Lorraine produced this video promo for LAAA's 90th anniversary. I was her camera operator and Rob Grad produced the music, otherwise she coordinated, shot and edited everything. Lorraine's working on a longer version with artist interviews as a promo for the association.

Just finished another graphic design project, this time for my pal Adam "MOCEAN WORKER" Dorn. His new album is coming out August 18 on iTunes. We've got the pre-release version playing here in the studio. It's a cool jazz-funk bomb with some seriously soulful bass playing.

Eclectic Music Fest poster

I just finished the poster for this year's Eclectic music fest, a hometown & homegrown music festival here in South Pasadena. I found the parrot jewelry in my picture library and it was an instant connection; big flocks of those those birds squawk constantly in the trees around town. One version for store windows and another for the for-sale posters. Next up – tee shirts for the event.

SPARC event featuring artist Lun*ah Menoh

Fabulous performance event at the studio Thursday night. Artist Lun*ah Menoh and the Sewing Sisters performed a musical fashion show. SPARC, the South Pasadena Arts Council, hosted the fundraising event in conjunction with Lun*ah's opening of her show "Dirty Laundry" at the SoPas Gallery. Absolutely one of the coolest events we've shown at the studio.

The Paradise Circus at the LA Art Show

The Paradise Circus Los Angeles 2015 at the LA Art Show was a unique opportunity for me to don the fez and bust out my inner ringmaster. Nearly 3,000 people knelt to behold my version of Paradise during a very busy 5 day run at the LA Convention Center. Shana Dambrot graciously co-hosted my Saturday afternoon artist talk to assembled friends and passersby. Thanks to all who came out for that.

Opening night time-lapse.

Creating, assembling and showing this work was a great experience. Thanks and praises to all who helped me to realize this, including:

James Peterson and David Paris of Art and Contraptions for masterful construction,
The artist known as Mocean Worker for a haunting tune that was surprisingly listenable,
Peter Mays of the LA Art Association for being such a strong promoter of my work,
Kim and Allison from the LA Art Show for providing me with show real estate,
Kristine Schomaker of Shoebox PR for getting the message out,
Lici Koch for determined and elegant needlework,
Barbie, Neal, Tina, Steph and Eric from LAAA for their long days helping out at the booth,
Marla and Dylan for their help and support with this and all my projects,
Lorraine for help with this and all the other things.

Paradise Circus – video preview

Here's a short preview we just created while building The Paradise Circus Los Angeles 2015. There's a quick glimpse of the final Paradise image in this vid - I'll post the complete image after the show opens.

Thanks, Lorraine, for putting this together.
